Meet Our Attorneys

The workers’ compensation team for the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin is comprised of seven workers’ compensation lawyers. Our workers’ compensation attorneys are diverse and very talented, with three board certified specialists in worker’s compensation law, two former deputies with the North Carolina Industrial Commission, and two former worker’s compensation insurance defense lawyers.

J. Michael Mackay
Board Certified Specialist in workers’ compensation law, Mr. Mackay was previously a worker’s compensation insurance defense lawyer. He is also the head of the workers’ compensation department at the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin.

Matthew Harbin
Former Special Deputy Commissioner of the North Carolina Industrial Commission, Mr. Harbin is a Board Certified Specialist in Worker’s Compensation law. At the Commission, he received experience in deciding whether injured workers should continue to receive workers’ compensation benefits.

Doug Berger
Former Deputy Commissioner for the North Carolina Industrial Commission, Mr. Berger presided over workers’ compensation trials throughout the state, issuing more than 600 opinions and awards.

Barry Jennings
Before arriving at the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin, Mr. Jennings first worked as a workers’ compensation insurance defense lawyer, where he learned to deal with the intricacies and complexities of workers’ compensation cases.

Jennifer Shapiro
Ms. Shapiro is a Board Certified Specialist in workers’ compensation law. Before becoming a workers’ compensation attorney, Ms. Shapiro worked as a workers’ compensation insurance defense lawyer, but after five years made the transition to helping workers who were injured on-the-job.

Rick Fleming
An experienced bilingual attorney, Mr. Fleming has helped many injured people with their claims.

Rita Hanshumaker
As a bilingual attorney, Ms. Hanshumaker is one of the attorneys at the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin who makes first contact with Latino clients regarding workers’ compensation claims. Before joining the law firm, she was a litigation attorney for an insurance defense firm for four years.
